Long Way To Earth... Part 7

'I used to play the staff flute', Bromford, the bard, continued, 'and within the notes of my music the images of my stories became vivid and alive.'

'What is a staff flute?' KussKuss, the llama wanted to know. 'And why aren't you playing it these days?'

'Take a look at this wandering staff of mine', said Bromford and grabbed the wooden stick with a metal tip and spike from the wall next to the kitchen stove. 'It is more than a staff I could lean on during my long and exhausting travels. See the brass tip at the top of it? That is the flute part. And when I stick it into the ground - or when I place it in front of an open window like now…'

The bard stood up and fastened the staff upright between the backrest of a kitchen chair and the stony window sill.

'…I allow the winds to blow and play it.'

A cold breeze of air from the late December night entered the kitchen through the open window, but it was weak and could only cause a faint and disappointing whistle from the staff flute.
