A little headache like an arrhythmic clapping of cloven-hoofed animals' feet seemed to knock from the inside against Dora's skull.
But enough of these red thoughts, she thought. What about the colour of Vermilion? Maybe that can light up my day.
Today was the fifth day of the last month and the last full-moon of the year. Going through her supplies of jars and bottles she found that she ran out of moonlight and moonshadow and - most important of all the ingredients for spells and magical potions - moondust, too.
Maybe it was the right time to leave her barrel and to collect some of all of it like a Moss Woman she once met in the Forest of Where taught her.
But again her thoughts and memories wandered off to the past.

'My melody?' the llama - whose name was of course KussKuss - asked the bard.
'Mamelodi,' the bard answered, 'a township in South Africa. But you were close, animal. The name can be translated to mean Mother of Melodies.'
'But, Mother of Frank, what brought us here, Bromford?'
'The speed of the wings of the wind, maybe, animal. The same power that makes my staff flute sing. Or the powers of the full-moon.'
"Bromford"

Cold Moon
Sister Moon, will be my guide
In your blue, blue shadows, I would hide
All good people, asleep tonight
I′m all by myself, in your silver light
I would gaze at your face the whole night through
I'd go out of my mind, but for you
I′d go out of my mind, but for you
Lying in a mother's arms
The primal root of a woman's charms
I′m a stranger to the sun
My eyes are too weak
How cold is a heart
When it′s warmth that he seeks?
You watch every night, you don't care what I do
I′d go out of my mind, but for you
I'd go out of my mind, but for you
My mistress′s eyes are nothing like the sun
My hunger for her explains everything I've done
To howl at the moon the whole night through
And they really don′t care if I do
I'd go out of my mind, but for you
Sister Moon

ReplyDeleteMy mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.
